A short glossary of the terms you meet most often in website and web-app development — explained in plain language, no jargon.
- AAPI
- An interface through which systems exchange data with each other.
- CCMS
- A content management system that lets you edit the site without a developer.
- CConversion
- The share of visitors who take a desired action: a lead, a call, a purchase.
- CCore Web Vitals
- Google's page speed and stability metrics: LCP, INP and CLS.
- DDomain
- A site's address on the internet, e.g. ostohlo.com.
- HHosting
- The service where a site's files and database physically live.
- Hhreflang
- Markup for a page's language versions so search shows the right language.
- IIntegration
- Connecting a site to an external service: CRM, payments, delivery, analytics.
- LLanding page
- A single-page site built for one goal — selling a service or collecting leads.
- MMVP
- A minimum viable product — the core features needed to test demand quickly.
- PPrototype
- A wireframe of future screens before design — to agree on logic and structure.
- PPWA
- A progressive web app — a site that installs like an app and works offline.
- RRedesign
- Reworking a site's design and structure — ideally without losing search rankings.
- RResponsive design
- Layout that works equally well on phone, tablet and desktop.
- SSaaS
- Software as a service: a cloud product on subscription, with nothing to install on your own server.
- SSEO
- Search engine optimization — work that helps a site rank higher in Google.
- SSSL / HTTPS
- Connection encryption — the padlock in the address bar and secure data transfer.
- TTechnical spec
- A document describing the scope, features and requirements of a project.
- UUX/UI
- UX is how usable and logical the interaction is; UI is the visual layer of the interface.
- WWeb application
- A site with logic and accounts — not just pages, but behavior and data.
