A marketplace is not a catalogue with a checkout. It is a two-sided system where supply and demand must meet at once, trust must be built between strangers, and money must move safely between them. Projects fail when the mechanics — matching, payments, moderation — are treated as features to add later.

Ostohlo is a product web studio: we build the mechanics first. We ship and operate our own live freelance marketplaces, so escrow edge cases, disputes, fake listings, and the cold-start problem are things we have lived through in production. If you are a founder or CTO with a real budget building a two-sided platform, our full engagement model is on the services page.

What usually goes wrong

The cold-start / liquidity problem

An empty marketplace is worthless to both sides: buyers leave with no supply, sellers leave with no buyers. This is a product problem, not marketing — you need seeding, single-player utility before liquidity, and a category narrow enough to reach density in one segment first.

Trust between strangers

The two sides have never met and have no reason to trust each other. Without verified identity, honest reviews, visible history, and a dispute path, transactions never leave the chat. Trust and safety is core infrastructure, designed in from day one.

Moving money safely

The moment you hold funds between two parties you inherit escrow, refunds, chargebacks, split payouts, and platform commission. Getting the money model wrong is expensive to unwind — balances and payout history cannot be casually migrated.

Moderation that scales

Manual review works for the first hundred listings and collapses at the first thousand. Spam, fraud, prohibited items, and duplicate accounts arrive with traction. Moderation queues, pre-filters, and admin tooling must be built in, not retrofitted.

What we build

Listings and search

Structured listings with category-specific fields, media, geo, and a status lifecycle, over fast faceted search that stays relevant as inventory grows into the hundreds of thousands.

Matching and discovery

The logic connecting the right demand to the right supply — ranking, relevance, recommendations, saved searches, and notifications that bring both sides back.

User roles and profiles

Distinct roles for the two sides — buyer and seller, employer and freelancer, host and guest — each with its own onboarding, dashboard, permissions, and profile. Role design is the backbone of the platform.

Payments, escrow, and wallet

Held funds, escrow release on completion, internal balances and top-ups, split payouts, and platform commission, over a ledger that keeps every balance reconciled.

Ratings and reviews

Two-sided reviews tied to real completed transactions, aggregate scores, and history that makes reputation portable and hard to fake — anchored to transactions that actually happened.

Moderation and admin

A real back office: moderation queues, listing approval, user management, dispute handling, abuse reporting, and the operator metrics you need day to day.

Products already in production

Our strongest proof is not a testimonial — we run marketplaces ourselves. 24freelance is a live freelance marketplace with employer and freelancer roles, project listings, member balances and top-up, and a full moderation pipeline. ProFreelance is a second live platform on the same foundations, with social login, wallet top-up, and a tasks entity. Escrow edge cases, disputes, fake listings, and moderation at volume are things we operate every day.

How we work

01

Model the mechanics first

Before any screen we map the roles, the transaction lifecycle, the money flow, and the trust signals. Those decisions constrain everything downstream, so we make them deliberately, not mid-build.

02

Pick one side to win first

Two-sided liquidity is won one category and one geography at a time. We scope an MVP that is genuinely useful before the network effect exists, so the platform earns use from day one.

03

Build the ledger like it is load-bearing

Balances, escrow, and payouts get a proper transactional ledger from the start — the part of a marketplace you can least afford to get wrong or rewrite later.

04

Own the platform after launch

It is your codebase, your data, and your infrastructure. We build to be operated — admin tooling, moderation, observability — so your team runs it without lock-in. See our guide to building an online store from scratch for how we approach commerce foundations.

Why Ostohlo

  • We operate our own live marketplaces — 24freelance and ProFreelance — so the hard parts are experience, not theory.
  • We build product systems, not landing pages: roles, ledgers, matching, and moderation are core engineering.
  • You own everything — code, data, infrastructure — with no vendor lock-in.
  • We work internationally — US, UK, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, the Baltics — in English, Russian, and Ukrainian.
  • Admin tooling, moderation queues, and observability ship with the product, not after it.

FAQ

Serious two-sided marketplace builds start around $20k and scale with roles, the escrow model, and moderation depth. We scope a concrete MVP first so the budget buys a platform that can reach liquidity in one segment. Ask for a scoped estimate via contact.

We give the MVP single-player value before the network effect exists, and focus on one category and one geography until it reaches density. Seeding, saved searches, and return notifications are built in from the start.

Yes. Funds are captured, held while the transaction runs, and released on completion, with dispute handling and platform commission. We integrate real payment providers over a transactional ledger so every balance reconciles.

Moderation queues, automated pre-filters, user reporting, and admin tooling are part of the core build. Spam, fraud, and prohibited listings are caught before and after publication without reviewing everything by hand.

Completely. It is your codebase, database, and infrastructure. We build so your own team can operate and extend the platform, with no dependency on us.

Templates are fine for a directory. The moment you need custom roles, real escrow, transaction-anchored reviews, or moderation at volume, you hit the template's ceiling. Custom marketplace software costs more up front but is far cheaper than rebuilding later.
